As a young citizen seeking to immerse myself in the spirit of my times, I was thrilled by the experience of learning about the press and its role in society. Many still see those years from the late 1950s through the 1970s as a kind of golden age of American journalism, a time when television in particular came into its own as a journalistic medium. In the early days of television, the three networks began to see tremendous value in (and bestowed generous budgets on) news and documentary divisions as a way not just to gain ratings and proﬁts but also, and equally important, to earn prestige.
